James (Toby) Tobin, age 92 a resident of Roxbury, New York, died on Friday Jan. 10, 2020 in Florida.
Toby was born in Newfoundland on February 19, 1927. At the age of sixteen came to Hobart Township where he worked on the Merwin farm, moving to
Roxbury in January 1944 to work for TV Proskine. In 1945 Toby started working for Carl Shuster and then for electrical contractors Cower and Mattice. From1951 to 1959 he worked in both the East Branch and West Branch water tunnels suppling water to New York City. In 1960 William Mattice and Toby formed a partnership and in 1965 Tobin Electric was born when Grandpa Bill retired. Toby’s son Jerry joined the business as a partner in 1976, and when Jerry took over the business Toby continued working part-time until Jerry retired and moved to Florida.
Toby met Betty Lou Mattice who became his wife in October of 1946. Betty Lou passed away in 2012. Toby is survived by children Jerry, Jackie and Sandy and also by four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Family services were held in Florida. Committal will be at the Roxbury cemetery at a later date .
