The German-American Club of the Northern Catskills, Inc. recently awarded two $500 scholarships for 2014. The recipients are Gitta Johanna Watson, who graduated from Seneca High School in Tabernacle, NJ in June, and Nikolaus Steg IV, a graduate of Schuylerville Central School.
Nik lives in Saratoga Springs with his parents, Nik and Irene, and younger brother Erich. Among his many accomplishments is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and being on the U.S. National Luge Team, which took him to Canada as well as Germany and Austria, where he could practice his German. Look for him at a future Winter Olympics game. He is majoring in engineering at Clarkson University this fall. His proud “Oma” is Marianna Gohrig of Andes.
Gitta Watson studied German for three years and had the opportunity to visit Germany last summer. She has been involved in many school activities and has been in scouting since the age of six. Gitta graduated in the top 10 percent of her class and is planning to study engineering at Rutgers University in the fall.
She and her parents, Richard and Brigitte, as well as her brothers, Erich and Graham, live in Tabernacle, NJ.
Gitta is the granddaughter of Hans and Marion Hohn of Margaretville.
