The Margaretville Lady Blue Devils shut out the Stamford Lady Indians, 5-0, Saturday night in the semifinal round of the Stamford Mayor’s Cup to advance to the finals next Saturday where they will face the Roxbury Lady Rockets. The Devils got two goals from Netalia Herrera and single tallies from Marisol Flores, Kansas Shamro, and Alivia Cordero while their defense shut out the Indians.
Margaretville upset the tournament-defending champion South Kortright Lady Rams, 3-2 in overtime, Thursday afternoon in a firstround game that sent them into the semi-final round. The Lady Rams have dominated the tournament for the last decade and, asked after the game when the last time the Devils beat the Rams, Margaretville coach Toni Smith said she couldn’t remember and would have to look it up.
The Devils opened the scoring Thursday with a goal by Kansas Shamro off a corner kick. Alivia Cordero earned an assist. The Devils made it 2-0 with 5:42 left in the first half when Cordero broke free and scored unassisted.
The Rams got on the board with just 52 seconds left in the half when Lacy Eckert banged home a shot off a scrum in front of the Devils’ goal. Eckert tallied again at the 23:28 mark of the second half, off an assist by Sonia Reeves to knot the game.
Both teams had chances late in the second half but couldn’t find the nets and regulation time ran out with the score tied.
Marisol Flores banged home the game winner with just 26 seconds left in the first five minute overtime period when she scored unassisted. Neither team could find the nets in the second overtime and the Devils held on to earn the 3-2 win.
The Devils took 10 shots, earned four corners, were called for six fouls and were whistled for off sides eight times. Margaretville keeper Madison Storey made six saves.
The Rams took nine shots, eight corners and committed five fouls. South Kortright keeper Grace Schneider made three saves.
The Lady Blue Devils will face off against the Lady Roxbury Rockets for the championship of the Mayor Cup on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. Margaretville will be the home team.
