Lenten observations of most Christian churches are well underway and area clergy and those they lead have made their preparations for Easter.
United Methodist Churches
Holy Week services announced for the Upper Catskills Larger Parish of the United Methodist Church include the following:
Holy Thursday (4/18), a Service will be held at both the Margaretville Church and the Roxbury Church, each at 6:00 p.m.
Good Friday Services (4/19) the Parish will join with the Interfaith Council holding a service at Noon at the Advent Christian Church in Margaretville. A service will also be held at the Andes UMC at 6:00 p.m.
Prayer Vigil will be held on Saturday (4/20) from 7 am – 5 pm at the Margaretville Church.
Easter (4/21) Sunrise Services will be held at the Andes UMC and the Roxbury UMC, both at 7:00 a.m., with breakfast to follow in both locations. Tentative plans remain for a service at Belleayre Mountain sponsored by the Interfaith Council at 6:30 a.m.
A Full Easter Morning Worship will be held at all of the churches in the Parish at their regular times. All are invited to come and celebrate the Risen Christ in worship and song!
Maundy Thursday will be a community service hosted at the Roxbury Methodist Church (noted above).
Easter Sunday starts with a 7:00 a.m. Easter Dawn service in the Gould Church. The community service is open to anyone who would like to join us as we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection! Following the service, there will be a breakfast in the church’s community room.
Easter Sunday continues with our 10:00 a.m. Easter Worship celebration. The message and music will highlight the joy of the resurrection. All are welcome!

Roman Catholic Churches Margaretville/Andes
Parishioners at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Margaretville and Saint Anne’s Mission Church in Andes marked the season with Stations of the Cross on Friday’s.
Holy Thursday Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart in Margaretville, with a Good Friday Mass in Margaretville at 6:00 p.m. on April 19.
Saturday evening Easter Vigil Mass will be held at 8:00 p. m. in Margaretville on April 20.
Confessions will be heard from 4:45 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. on Saturday at Sacred Heart in Margaretville, as usual.
Easter Sunday Masses on April 21 will be said at 9:00 a.m. in Margaretville and 11:30 a.m. in Andes.
Roman Catholic Churches
For The Triduum, there will be a Mass of the Lord’s Supper- Thursday April 18 at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart in Stamford followed by Night Prayer at 10:00 p.m.
Good Friday observances on April 19 will include Stations of the Cross at Noon at Saint Philip Neri in Grand Gorge as well as a 1st Day of Novena to the Divine Mercy. At Sacred Heart in Stamford, at 7:00 p.m. Passion Service will be held.
Holy Saturday on April 20 will feature a 10:30 a.m Morning Prayer service at Saint Philip Neri as well as a Second Day of Novena to the Divine Mercy. The Easter Vigil will be celebrated at 8:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart in Stamford.
Masses for Easter Sunday will be at 9:00 a.m. at St. Philip Neri and at Noon at Sacred Heart.
Memorial United Methodist Church – Shandaken
In addition to regular Easter Services there will be an Easter Vigil, Taize Service on Saturday, April 20 at 6:00 p.m.
Roman Catholic Church, Phoenicia
Holy Thursday, April 18 there will be Mass at 7:00 p.m. with a special ceremony of washing of the feet followed by Eucharistic Adoration until 12:00 a.m. in Fr. Gorman Hall (located in the back of the Rectory). Good Friday, April 19, a day of fast and abstinence will feature a ceremony of the Lord’s Passion at 3:00 p.m. with the Veneration of the Cross and Holy Communion. The Stations of the Cross will be at 7:00 p.m. Easter Vigil Mass on Saturday, April 20 will be at 7:00 p.m. There will be no 5:00 p.m. Mass. Mass begins (weather permitting) outside Church with the blessing of new fire, paschal candle. Easter Sunday, April 21 Masses will be at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
Saint James Church, Lake Delaware
Thursday April 18, 7 pm: Maundy Thursday Mass and Vigil
Friday April 19, 12 pm: Good Friday Mass of the Presanctified
Saturday April 20, 9 pm: The Great Vigil of Easter (this is arguably the most important service of Easter, as the Christmas Eve mass is to Christmas)
Sunday April 21, 10 am: Mass of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ; 2 pm: Easter Dinner in the Rectory (RSVP).
The guesthouse will be open from Maundy Thursday through Easter Day for anyone who would like to spend a day, an hour, or the whole time on retreat. Meals will be provided and no formal charge will be asked for your stay. Staying on site will be a good way to participate more deeply in the Holy Week liturgies.
