Weekend bird watching hikes at Balsam Mountain

Arkville — Catskill Forestry Association members Mike and Becky Porter of Margaretville and Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) volunteer hosts will be at the Balsam Lake Mountain Fire Tower this Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10.

The fire tower and the cabin at the summit will be open for tours and great vista views throughout the entire weekend, as it will be each weekend through Columbus Day.

The trail to the tower is a New York State trail in the state forest preserve. To reach the tower, travel up Dry Brook Road out of Arkville and then turn right Millbrook Road. Go to the top of the hill and park in the parking lot on the right. From there it is a three-mile walk on what is described as a “moderately difficult” trail. The first two miles are a lovely walk on an old town road with the difficult part coming near the summit.

On Saturday morning the Porters will lead a bird-watching walk. Participants should meet at the trailhead on Millbrook Road at 8 a.m. This hike will be held rain or shine and participants are welcome to join. Bring water, binoculars and snacks or lunch especially if you plan on going to the summit.
Appropriate footwear for stony trails is recommended. For more information call 586-3507.
