Carol Sanford

Carol Jane Beland Sanford passed away peacefully on August 7, 2018 at Margaretville Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. Carol was born in White Plains, NY, on July 16, 1938 to Laura and Frank Beland. The Beland family moved to Fleischmanns where Carol graduated from Fleischmanns High School in 1956.

Carol married the love of her life, John Sanford on February 9, 1957. They started to raise their family in Garnerville, NY, and then moved to Arkville in 1963. Prior to marrying John, Carol worked as a telephone operator for the Fleischmanns Telephone Company. During her marriage she was a homemaker and also the bookkeeper for John’s businesses.

Carol is survived by her loving husband John, her son Edward (Kellie) Sanford, her daughter, Jennifer Bouton, her daughter Cheryl (Rob Sweeney) Roberts, her grandchildren: Jamie (Mark) Vogler, Lucas and Marshall Bouton, Tommy, Caitlyn, Travis Roberts and Kevin Sweeney, Ashton (Brian) Grocholl, Kirstie (Andrew) Cafaldo, Kevin and Sean Lutz; and her great-grandchildren: Grace and Georgia Grocholl, Landon Vogler, and Jackson Cafaldo. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Beth (Michael) Smith, and extended grandchildren, Noel (Jenn) Amundsen, and their sons Landin and David, along with many other family and friends. Carol was predeceased by her parents, Laura and Francis Beland, and her sons-in law, Dennis Bouton and Tom Roberts.

Carol lived a fulfilling life. She loved to tell stories with enthusiasm, and was a great historian — particularly of the Arkville, Fleischmanns, and Margaretville areas. Carol and John loved dancing and traveling.

They traveled throughout their marriage, and visited places from Venezuela to Alaska, but the place she cherished the most was Lancaster County. This is where she was able to visit her favorite store, Eldreth Pottery and build her snowman pottery collection.

Carol’s greatest joy, however, was spending time with her family. She and John attended most of their grandchildren’s sporting events and school concerts, and were present at every family gathering.

They especially loved the times when they were able to reminisce with their nephews; Robert (Peggy) Sanford and Rick (Amber) Sanford, and close family friends, Mary and Philip Konstantine, and daughters Jenna and Sophia, Bob and Maria Pierce and their children, along with many other family members and friends.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Aug. 9 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Hynes Funeral Home. The service will be held at the Halcott United Methodist Church on Friday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Arkville Fire Department in Carol’s name.
