Janet Fishkind

Janet Fishkind, 88, formerly of Maplewood, NJ and a longtime resident of Big Indian, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on May 4, 2018.

She and her husband, John, had recently relocated to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, John; her son, David Fishkind; her daughter, Aimee Campbell, and her husband, James; granddaughter Katie Campbell; niece Connie Hirsch; nephews John Hirsch and his wife Lydia; Mark Hirsch and his wife Gayle, and their families. Her parents, Sidney and Sadie Bateman, and sister, Evelyn Hirsch, preceded her in death.

Janet was born on July 1, 1929 and raised in South Orange, New Jersey. She graduated from Columbia High School, earned her R.N. from Jersey City Medical Center, and B.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She worked as an Emergency Room Nurse, School Nurse, and Health Teacher. Later, her broad interest in medicine drove her to join a groundbreaking intercultural delegation of Citizen Ambassadors who traveled to Mongolia to study traditional Chinese medicine.

Following her nursing career, Janet helped develop S.H.A.R.E. (Self Help And Resource Exchange), an innovative charitable food distribution program in Newark, NJ, and later brought the S.H.A.R.E program to the Catskills.

Janet’s work life was defined by a commitment to helping others. Outside of work, her greatest joy was in gathering family and friends around her – whether at her beloved home at the Jersey Shore — or entertaining around her large dining table in Big Indian – and even continuing the tradition with new friends in her beautiful new home in South Carolina. Janet delighted in a full house, always “making room for one more.”

Janet’s favorite time of day was early morning, savoring a cup of coffee and “her” view of Slide Mountain, listening to the birds, and waiting for a glimpse of deer, turkeys, or chipmunks. She was a consummate animal lover, who cherished all animals, especially her two favorite cats, Gertrude and Sylvia.

Janet loved the Catskills and skiing at Belleayre Mountain. Sadly, health issues caused her to stop skiing abruptly many years ago. Janet also loved the ocean, having spent summers since early childhood at the Jersey Shore, sailing Barnegat Bay, swimming, and enjoying the beach. She mourned deeply the loss of the family beach home due to Hurricane Sandy.

We will miss Janet’s generous and kind nature. A Celebration of Life will be held June 3, 2018 from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm at Primavera Restaurant at The Wilshire Grand Hotel, 350 Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange, NJ. Contact d.fishkind@yahoo.com for more information. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Heart of the Catskills Humane Society (www.heartofthecatskills.org) or the charity of your choice.
