Anton ‘Tony’ Kasanof

Anton Noel Kasanof died peacefully Monday morning, April 23, 2018, after losing his long and valiant battle against Parkinson’s and its complications.

Tony was born in Manhattan on November 12, 1932, and upon graduating from the University of Chicago he served as an officer in the US Marine Corps. After the Marines, Tony became a foreign service officer in the US Department of State and served overseas at various American embassies.

As a child, Tony “summered up” at Griffins boarding house in Halcott Center, and in 1988, he retired to Halcott. For Tony, retirement included teaching at SUNY New Paltz, serving on the Columbia-Greene Community College Board of Trustees, and holding the posts of town supervisor and then town justice. He continued his active involvement in the community with great pride until forced to retire in 2012 due to his declining health.

Tony was loving, passionate and caring in all that he did: in his marriage, in helping to raise his children, in just sitting around his oak table with friends. He loved laughter and could somehow manage to successfully tell the same joke over and over. Tony was a lover of classical music and a great entertainer, able to imitate most instruments in the orchestra, and a keen critic of indifferent performers. He loved to garden, to tinker in his garage and he played a mean game of pinochle. In his life, he was a rare example of one who lived richly. We cherish our memories of him.

Tony is survived by his wife, Innes, his sister, Nina, his children and children-in-law: Laura, Sasha and Jen and Vanya and Jen, and his adorable grandchildren: Katya, Molly and Bradley.

Please join us for a celebration of his life at Huntersfield Christian Training Center in Prattsville on May 12 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Huntersfield, Tony’s very beloved retreat center.

Funeral arrangements under the direction of the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home, Phoenicia. You may share a special memory on Tony’s Memorial Page at gormleyfuneralhome.com
