Ernest Ballard

Ernest Smith Ballard, age 63, a long time resident of Denver, died Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Albany Medical Center.

Ernie was born in Margaretville on June 21, 1954, the son of Ivan Smith and Mary (Lennon) Ballard. He married Lori Jean Hendricks the daughter of George and Elizabeth Hendricks Sr. in 1984. Ernie grew up on the family farm in the Denver-Vega valley and graduated from Roxbury Central School in 1972.

He was employed at several companies in the area including Becker’s Tires, The Flower Shop, Lynn Kelly Construction, Country Home Security, and for 24 years worked at Simulaids in Saugerties, where he had been the warehouse manager.

Ernie enjoyed the time spent with family and friends. He liked to be outdoors appreciating nature, riding his four-wheeler, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed watching Western and action movies and had a great interest in farm tractors. His trip to Hawaii was also something he greatly enjoyed. Ernie was a hard worker, always willing to lend a helping hand. Ernie is survived by his wife, Lori Jean Ballard, his son, Garrett Smith Ballard, and his sisters Ethel (Norman) Marcus of Accord, Evelyn VanDeBogart of Arkville and Eva (Robert) Sanford, Denver as well as nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his mother and father and by sisters Esther and Eleanor.

Calling hours were held Sunday, March 11 at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 12 at the United Presbyterian Church in Margaretville. Committal prayers will be held in the spring at the Vega Cemetery. Donations in memory of Ernest Smith Ballard may be made to the United Presbyterian Church in Margaretville. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
