“Betty” Moore

Elizabeth (Betty) O’Hara Moore, 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Betty was born on May 26, 1922, daughter of late John and Zayda O’Hara, in Roxbury. She was one of 11 children. She attended a one-room schoolhouse, walking to and from school with her sister Bea. She left the family farm at age 14, working for, and living with, the Enderlin family while going to school in Roxbury.

After graduation and during WWII, she worked for the Bendix Military Aviation plant at Scintilla in Sidney, where she met Raymond Baldwin. They were married in November 1942 and had a daughter, Anne in 1947 in Syracuse. After Raymond died unexpectedly in 1948, Betty moved to Grand Gorge, where she eventually met Richard Moore at a dance. They married in 1950. They had two children; Allen and Janis and raised the family in Roxbury.

A loving and devoted mother and wife, grandmother and dear friend, she will be missed deeply by the many people whose lives she touched. She delighted everyone with her stories, sense of humor and clever solutions. She especially enjoyed family gatherings, camping and golfing with husband Dick, baseball games and good times with close friends, Tom and Jeannine Hinkley, Sanford and Bea Hinkley. She had a knack for painting and decorating, and was a creative seamstress; altering clothes to fit with fashion-forward flair. She was a devoted New York Yankee fan and a regular at the minor league games at Nehawa Park, Oneonta.

Dick & Betty enjoyed dancing throughout their marriage and were known to gain an audience for their swing dancing. They also enjoyed playing golf at the Shepard Hills Golf Club. She was a former member of St. Phillip Neri Church in Roxbury. Betty enjoyed a long career as Secretary-Treasurer with Prospect Enterprises with its’ numerous entities in Stamford. She prided herself in keeping books “to the penny”. Ask Betty about the price of gas in 1959 ( or any year) and she had the spreadsheet in-hand within minutes. After retirement she worked for Marcus and Mason Law Firm until age 71.

Dick and Betty sold their Bridge Street home in Roxbury and moved to a small house in rural Stamford where they enjoyed a simple life of maintaining a yard and home, enjoying grandchildren and planning the Annual O’Hara Reunion; a multigenerational weekend event with her siblings and their families. In later years, Betty and Dick moved to Oneonta, also spending each winter in Florida exploring the Daytona area. Living independently for many years, Betty recently moved to Robinson Terrace Assisted Living.

In addition to her parents, Betty is predeceased by her husbands, Raymond Baldwin and Richard “Dick” Moore, her sisters Bea Bellows, Katherine Marshall, Rose Osborne, Phyllis Ferrocane, Mary Powell, Patty Hinkley and brother John O’Hara. Betty is survived by siblings Donna Hull of Oneonta, Carol Serrano of Ulster Park, NY, and Richard O’Hara of Mashpee, MA, and by her children Anne (and Jim) Sutherland of Greenwich, NY, Allen (and Beth) Moore of Eagle Vail, CO, and Janis Moore (and Will Haynes) of Ormond Beach, FL. Surviving are grandchildren Matt Rowe of Parachute, CO, Dana (and David) Glisson of Durham, NC, Seth Butler of Glens Falls, NY, and Amanda (and Darren) Bernstein of Cary, NC, and greatgrandchildren Bailey Rowe, Chris and Matt Glisson, Ivy and Chloe Bernstein.

A service will be held Sunday, May 27, 1 p.m., at the Miller Funeral Home followed by a celebration of Betty’s life at Kirkside Pavillon.
