Marie Gladstone

Marie Gladstone of Andes passed away peacefully at Mountainside Residential Care Center, March 1 2018 with her family at her side.

She was born in Delhi, October 20, 1929, the daughter of Herbert and Edith (Russell) Graham. She graduated from Andes Central School in 1948. She attended the Delhi College food service program.

Marie married Wayland A Gladstone on October 29, 1950 and they began their life farming. Marie was a proud dairy farmer who loved her animals and milked her own herd of cattle until the age of 72. She loved her view from her front window and kept track of the work on the farm every day. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who shared many memories, stories and recipes and photographs. Marie had a love for genealogy spending many hours with her granddaughter, Wendy, researching the Gladstone, Graham, Calhoun, and Russell history. She was an avid bowler in Margaretville leagues for many years and was often one of the high scoring bowlers of the day. Marie loved to knit and crochet and made many pairs of mittens, hats, lap blankets and blankets for cats in the Humane Society in Delhi. She was a member and Treasurer of the Andes Seniors who enjoyed their friendship and travels.

A member of the Andes Alumni Association, she served as Treasurer and enjoyed planning the annual dinner and getting together with old friends and school mates. She loved to tell the story of walking from the old Hilton Memorial School into the new Andes Central School building when she was in grade school. Marie was also a member of the Andes United Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Andes Fire Department Auxiliary.

She is survived by her son Wayland “Bud” (Suzanne) Gladstone who carry on the family farm, her daughter Mary Vandenberg, her grandchildren, Michelle (Scott) Dullea, Wendy (Brian) Cooley, Chelsea (Jason) Guy, Patrick (Deanna) Meres and Jennifer Meres (Cristian DeMeo). She is also survived by 13 great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by her sister Doris (Wallace) Rich of Hobart, many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wayland, Sr., her daughter, Kathryn Jacques, her brother, William Graham, son-inlaw James Vandenberg and great grandson C.J.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service per her wish. A spring burial will be at the Andes Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Andes Seniors, the Andes Alumni Association, the Delaware County Humane Society and the Mountainside Residential Care Center Sunshine Fund.
