It was almost season-long in the making, and it wasn’t that pretty, but the Margaretville Lady Blue Devils broke a 16- game losing streak last week Tuesday night in Jefferson, besting the Lady J-Hawks, 39-35. The Lady J-Hawks remain winless on the year.

Both teams struggled to score in the first quarter. Kayla Petry hit a three pointer with just two minutes, six seconds left in the quarter to break the ice for the Devils. Jefferson’s Michaela Eppich answered for the JHawks with a two-point field goal and then the Devils’ Victoria Marin hit a two and Margaretville led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter.

The Devils extended their lead in the second quarter on the strength of three point goals by Marin, Petry, and Paige Credaroli and a pair of twopoint goals by Ithamar Silva to take a 20-12 lead into the locker room at the half.

But the J-Hawks, who were also seeking their first win of the year, weren’t about to quit. Jefferson’s Alyssa Gadoury poured in seven points, Eppich added another four, and Olivia Eppich added a two-point hoop, all while the Devils went stone cold and scored only four points in the quarter. At the end of three, the J-Hawks led 25-24 and things were looking up for the home team.

Strong finish

But the fourth quarter belonged to the Devils. The JHawks quickly amassed five fouls and the Devils went to the line six times in the quarter. Kansas Shamro and Petry each made two of four tries and Taylor Stake went one for two. Silva, Shamro, Kaitlin Garcia, Luca Rowe, and Stake each scored two-point baskets, giving the Devils 15 in the quarter. Margaretville’s defense stiffened, holding the J-Hawks to only nine points in the final frame, and the Devils went home on a snowy night with their first win of the season, 39- 35.

Silva and Petry led the Devils’ scoring with eight points each. Marin added six, and Stake had five.

The J-Hawk’s Michaela Eppich had game high-scoring honors with 12 points. Gadoury added 10 for Jefferson.
