Margaretville man was killed in Huckleberry Brook crash

Margaretville — A Margaretville man was killed in a one-vehicle crash that occured either late on January 1 or early in the morning on January 2.

Pronounced dead at the scene was Rion Gavette, age 32. The crash occurred on Lower Huckleberry Brook Road, about three miles from the Village of Margaretville.

Officials said that the victim did not return home on Monday night, leading to friends and family to search for him. On Tuesday morning, Gavette’s vehicle was discovered partially overturned in the small Huckleberry Brook stream.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash.

In other emergency news over the busy holiday weekend, First responders were kept on the run during a frigid New Year’s Holiday weekend with temperatures dropping well below zero. The extreme weather proved to be an added hardship for the area volunteer firefighters and police.

The Margaretville Fire Department responded to six calls over the holiday weekend, the first of the calls was a cardiac arrest victim who was transported by helicopter to an out of area hospital. The second calls was for a structure fire on Bull Run Road, Margaretville where a quick response prevented major damage.

The third alarm was for a motor vehicle accident involving a pickup truck that collided with a Town of Middletown snow plow. No injuries were reported.

The fifth calls was for the fatal crash on Huckleberry Brook, Margaretville detailed above and the last call was a motor vehicle accident off of Main Street, Margaretville.
