Historic old church building suffers heavy damage

A stubborn fire in an old Arvkille church drew firefighters from around the county Saturday afternoon.  Reported shortly after noon, Arkville fire fighters were on the scene within minutes. The building's proximity to the fire house and the rapid response of first responders kept the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Fire departments from Fleischmanns and Margaretville quickly joined Arvkille at the scene and by 2:00 p.m., a ladder truck from Stamford had arrived to assist.  As of 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, the fire appeared to be under control with those on the scene digging in to the structure to get at any remaining hot spots.  The News will have a complete story in next week's paper and additional pictures by Dick Sanford, who took those posted here, and Joan Lawrence-Bauer.
