Pastor Lee Stowe began serving as pastor for The Memorial United Methodist Church in Shandaken this past July and the community is grateful and welcoming. Previous to Stowe’s arrival, the church went 1.5 years without a pastor.

This is Stowe’s very first position as a pastor. When asked how he came about being a pastor Stowe says “it came to me. God works like that.” He received a call from the District Superintendent who said “I’ve got an appointment for you” which lead to his position as pastor of The Memorial United Methodist Church.

Shokan born

Stowe is no stranger to churches as he is a certified lay minister. “My father was a band director and taught me about music, my mother taught me about God.” Stowe was born and raised in Shokan. He spent much of his career teaching music. He graduated Ithaca College with a Masters Degree in music education. Stowe has been teaching music for close to 30 years.

He began his musical career as the Choir Director and organist for the Reservoir United Methodist Church in Shokan in 1989 and is still holds the position there. He’s taught music at many local schools including Onteora, Suny Ulster, Hyde Park, Livingston Manor, and Germantown. He currently is the band director at Cairo Durham in Greene County. In addition to being pastor at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Shandaken, beginning soon Stowe will be organist for the church.

Stowe says of the community “people in this area are a close knit family where everyone watches out for each other.” Stowe is a great addition to the church and of attendees welcomes all. “Open hearts, open minds, open doors, all are welcome.” The Memorial United Methodist Church was built in the 1840’s and currently has approximately 30 members. Future goals of Stowe and the church is to get younger people to start coming to church again, and get “re-connected with God.” The church is in the stages of planning events for the upcoming holiday season.

The next event to take place is Saturday October 14th. The church will be having a Sunday school chicken BBQ hosted by the Sunday school from 5-7pm, offering take out beginning at 4:30pm. The BBQ is to help benefit the Sunday school program. Included with the dinner is ½ chicken, baked potato, cole slaw, and a roll. There will also be beverages and homemade desserts.
