Shandaken eatery traces origins back half-a-century

The Catskill Seasons Inn, welcoming guests for more than half-a-century, got new owners this summer and though the faces are changing, the quality and service that have been attracting both residents and visitors, has remained happily consistent.

Located on Rt. 42 in Shandaken and once one of five famous French restaurants in the region (it was Auberge des Quatre Saison) the landmark was purchased this summer by David Mallov.

The menu and staff are remaining the same and former owners Chago & Vicki Betes, who operated the inn and restaurant for the past 12 years are still frequently present at the restaurant. But their excitement and that of Mallov and his family are palpable. In addition to great food and atmosphere, there’s a sense of things to come.

One of the few completely full service resort properties remaining in the region, The Catskill Seasons Inn boasts 22 rooms, many which accommodate multiple families, on 60 acres of land. The rooms include kitchens and living room space and there are pet friendly rooms available. Amenities include a fire pit, a tennis and basketball court and accessible hiking trails. Discount tickets to nearby Belleayre Ski Center are available.

Food style

The restaurant at Catskill Seasons Inn is “American food with a South American flair,” says owner Mallov. There is a new chef, Annie Luberto Galperin, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, she is happily cooking all the original recipes Chago created and dreaming up new specials of her own. Many of the draft beers are local including West Kill Brewing and Keegan Ales in Kingston. There is a full list of specialized drinks and Martini’s as well as a full bar. And oh what a bar. The perfect combination of casual corner and intimacy without edge. It’s a great place to start and finish an evening meal.

The Catskill Seasons Inn offers a full menu including appetizers, seafood, steaks, poultry, and vegetable entrees. Some of the most popular food menu items include; Chago’s Pil Pil; a signature dish which is a Chilean style shrimp and scallop dish. They offer a bar menu which includes items such as the rib eye steak sandwich, burgers, chicken wings, and shrimp.

Bartender Josey Carris says, “The most popular bar menu item is the burger. I’ve heard people say it’s the best burger in the Catskills.”

One of their most popular nights at The Catskill Seasons is their Thursday night $16.50 special. “We are mobbed on Thursday” says Mallov. “Be sure to make reservations.” On Thursday, the special menu offers a full package deal where one can get a salad, entrée, with coffee and tea. Thursday menu items frequently include prime rib, schnitzel, and chicken marsala. The greens are locally sourced from places like RSK farms in Prattsville.

Live music coming

Coming this October, live music will be happening each and every Friday featuring local blues music performed by musician and WIOX Radio program host T.J. Turgeon. The restaurant at Catskill Seasons Inn is open for dinner Thursday thru Saturday from 4pm till 10pm. Breakfast hours are Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until noon.
