Wet-plate photography workshop slated at RAG

ROXBURY — Fine art photographer Kevin Q. Gray will be directing a workshop focused on an alternative photographic process called wet-plate photography on Sunday Sept. 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Roxbury Arts Center.

In this Wet-Plate Photography workshop, participants will learn how to make traditional wet-plate tintypes, ambrotypes, and glass-plate negatives. Students will explore, from start to finish, how to go about the hobby of wet-plate, from where and how to purchase equipment, safety measures, chemical preparation, coating and exposing plates, and varnishing images. Materials will be provided and students will go home with at least one tintype and glass plate. Students should bring a lunch and wear clothing that can be stained.

Based in upstate New York, Kevin Q Gray’s work spans digital, film, dry-plate tintypes, wet-plate photography, and emulsion lifts. He received a BFA in Photography and Painting from Hartwick College in Oneonta NY, and an MFA in Visual Arts from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Much of Kevin’s work is based on nature and the landscape, but he also creates work that explores notions of nostalgia, memory, and history. Kevin lives in Cherry Valley with his wife and a myriad of domesticated animals.

“Kevin Q. Gray is an exceptional teaching artist with years of experience, and he is offering a unique creative learning opportunity right here in our community” says Program Director Martínez-Riddle. “I suggest that you register as soon as possible. This workshop is guaranteed to fill.” According to Riddle, due to the hands-on nature of the workshop, space is limited to 6 participants, aged 16 and up and advanced registration is required.
