Town of Olive Fire and Rescue were called to the Bread Alone Bakery in Boiceville on reports of an explosion at 12:55 p.m. on Monday May 22.

Town of Olive Fire Chief Chris Winne confirmed that Bread Alone was closed at the time for renovations and that two plumbing contractors working on a flooring project cut through concrete and hit a gas pocket.

A flash fire ignited burning three victims, but consumed itself with no damage to the building.

Two were transported to Kingston Hospital Health Alliance and the third, a painting contractor, was treated and released at the scene. At 1:32 p.m. Ulster County 911 received a Town of Olive Fire Department request for HAZMAT assistance from City of Kingston.

Nels Leader, Bread Alone Vice President, confirmed there was no gas line in that 30-yearold section of flooring and is working with officials to determine the cause.

Owner appreciative

Leader expressed “well wishes to the two injured plumbers. They have worked on many projects with us and are considered part of the Bread Alone family. We wish them a speedy recovery. We are also grateful to the first responders in a community that we’ve been part of for 35 years.”

Leader indicated that injuries were initially thought to be minor but both victims have been moved to The Burn Center at Westchester Medical Center indicating a more serious condition. The extent of their injuries has not been reported but Leader says he is following their progress to provide assistance.

Volunteer fire personnel from Boiceville and West Hurley arrived within six minutes of the call, changing into their gear in the Boiceville Inn parking lot next door.

This is the second incident this year at a Bread Alone location. An unoccupied box truck, parked near the loading dock, caught on fire at the Lake Katrine location on March 18. There were no injuries but the truck was a complete loss. Incidence reports determined it was caused by an electrical issue in the engine compartment.

Bread Alone, a family-owned business since 1983, specializes in organic breads and other baked goods. The company operates four stores in the area, including the original in Boiceville, Woodstock, Rhinebeck, and a new production facility in Lake Katrine.
