Was passenger on motorcycle driven by husband
By Brian Sweeney

A 50-year-old Oneonta woman was killed early Sunday afternoon when she fell from the back of a motorcycle and was struck by an oncoming vehicle on Route 23 in the Town of Roxbury.

State police at Margaretville reported that Elizabeth Betancourt was a passenger on a 1997 Honda motorcycle operated by husband, Yamir Betancourt, 53, when the accident occurred, shortly after noon.

Mr. Betancourt told investigators he was driving east on Route 23, just past the former Hitching Post restaurant, when his motorcycle drifted over the center yellow line. He overcorrected and lost control of the motorcycle, causing it to fall.

The impact resulted in Mrs. Betancourt being ejected and falling into the path of a westbound 1995 Honda Pilot operated by Isaac Abramchayey, 38, of Fresh Meadow.

Delaware County Coroner Dr. Richard Ucci declared Mrs. Betancourt dead at the scene.

Mr. Betancourt was treated at the scene for abrasions to his right knee and left forearm. His injuries did not require further medical attention. Mr. Abramchayev was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing. No tickets have been issued.

Grand Gorge EMS, Grand Gorge Fire Department personnel and Cooperstown Medical Transport Roxbury Constable Steve Williamson assisted at the scene.

Route 23 between Grand Gorge and Prattsville was closed to traffic for most of the afternoon during the accident investigation.
