Elsie Proper

Elsie M. Proper, 94, a resident of Grand Gorge, passed away Sunday April 9, 2017 at Wesley Nursing Home, Saratoga Springs, New York. Elsie was born May 5, 1922 at Kortright Station, New York, the daughter of George and Anna (Ruteshouser) Ploutz. She married Euclid G. Proper on June 25, 1948 at Lakeville, Ct. He died April 15, 1982.

Elsie was a member of the first graduating class at the Roxbury Central School, which was built in 1939. She entered the U. S. Army on September 27, 1944 and served until June 22, 1946. While in the Army she worked as a chauffeur driving two and half ton trucks, jeeps, reconnaissance cars and staff cars to and from Installation at Fort Robinson, Nebraska. She also supervised cooking for 110 enlisted women at Camp Lee, Virginia.

After marriage, Elsie traveled with her husband to several states where he worked on construction jobs. They eventually moved back to the Catskills to work on the Downsville (Pepacton) Dam project. Later they purchased the Crossing restaurant in Grand Gorge and then ran Blue Halter Horse farm, building the barn to raise Morgan horses. Elsie had a passion for animals.

Elsie is survived by one daughter, Janet Baldwin of Schenectady, three sons Dr. James Proper of N.C., Mark of Grand Gorge and Dean of Schenectady. Six grandchildren survive as do six great grandchildren and a brother Paul (Geri) Ploutz of Albany, Ohio.

There will be a calling hour prior to the funeral service starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, New York on Thursday April 13, 2017 followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Richard Dykstra will officiate.

Committal prayers will follow at the Roxbury cemetery. Donations in memory of Elsie M. Proper may be made to the Cancer Couch Foundation, P.O. Box 1145, Southport, Ct. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Miller Funeral home, Roxbury..
