Shirley Finch

Shirley W. Finch, 86, of Elk Creek Road, Halcott Center, died peacefully at the home of her daughter, Kathleen Ballard in Scotia on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017.

A native and lifelong area resident, she was born November 12, 1930 in Halcott, daughter of the late Kenneth and Willa Belle Scudder Streeter.

Shirley attended the one-room schoolhouse in Halcott, and was a roll model to all who knew her as she lived life to the fullest despite her blindness at the age of 16. She was fiercely independent, and always up for a sense of adventure. She raised four beautiful children, who confess that they never could pull anything over on their Mom! She took great joy in socializing with friends and family, and was known to cook for everybody. Shirley displayed great inner strength and courage when she moved to Albany to be partnered with a seeing-eye dog. She worked many years as a vendor in the State Office buildings in Albany. She enjoyed camping with her family, and listening to country music. Throughout her life, she had no complaints, and was always willing to try new things.

Surviving are her three daughters, Kathleen Ballard of Scotia, Annette Oliver of Indiana, and Wesleah Bates of Fleischmanns. Several grand children, great grand children, and great-great grand children also survive.

She was predeceased by her son, Douglas in 1992.

A service to celebrate the life of Shirley will be held on Thursday, March 2 at 11 a.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main Street, Phoenicia with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt as celebrant. Friends will be received on Wednesday, March 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home.

Burial will be in the family plot at the Halcott Cemetery.
