Robert Cruickshank Jr.

Robert (Bob) Fraser Cruickshank Jr. of Big Indian died peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at Margaretville Hospital.

A longtime resident of Big Indian and Scarsdale, he was born July 8, 1924, the son of Robert F. Cruickshank and Helen (McGovern) Cruickshank and married to Denise (Harkins) Cruickshank who predeceased him, and Linda (Leland) Fitzpatrick Cruickshank, his wife of almost 30 years. He was a devout Catholic and member of the St. Francis de Sales Parish.

Robert grew up in Forest Hills and was a graduate of Brooklyn Preparatory High School and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy. He was a member of the Class of ‘46/49’, his education interrupted by three years of service with the 243rd Combat Engineer Battalion of the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. He was often behind enemy lines doing demolition, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was with the first troops to liberate Buchenwald. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with an American Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. He was an engineer and inventor and after receiving his college degree, Bob owned and operated three businesses, Nip- Co Manufacturing, E. E. Brennan Co., and HiLo Pet Care Products.

Bob loved his Catskill Mountains and was an avid hunter, fisherman, skier, and horseback rider. His horses and dogs loved him as much as he loved them. He enjoyed singing and his version of “Danny Boy” was a family favorite. He loved his family and will be sorely missed by his wife, children, and grandchildren. The family is very grateful to the staff at Mountainside Residential Care Center for the kind care they gave Bob, they loved him and he loved them.

Bob is survived by his wife, Linda Cruickshank of Big Indian; his sister, Jean (Cruickshank) Maher of Palm City, FL and Windham; his daughters, Laura of Mansfield Center, CT, Suzanne of Larchmont, Kathleen of Carbondale, CO, Denise of Pine Hill, and Elizabeth Cruickshank of Durham, PA; his sons, Robert of Big Indian, and James Cruickshank of Brooklyn; 12 grandchild ren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Sara Ann (Cruickshank) Loughran of Shelburne, VT.

His funeral procession formed on Monday, Feb. 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main St., Phoenicia and thence to the St. Francis de Sales Church where at 11 a.m. a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Fr. Raphael Iannone.

Friends were received on Sunday, Feb. 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home.

Spring interment will be held in the family plot at the Pine Hill Cemetery.
