Ralph Smith

Ralph G. Smith, 94, a resident of Margaretville, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, at Mountainside Residential Care Center after a long illness.

Ralph was born in Brooklyn on September 12, 1922, the son of Adolph and Minnie (Wirth) Smith. He married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Pederson on November 22, 1941.

Ralph grew up in Queens and attended Andrew Jackson High School of Tool and Die Making. In 1942 he joined the U.S. Navy following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and served as a gunner’s mate. Ralph worked at Republic Aviation on Long Island for 20 years and then was employed by IBM in Burlington, VT from 1966 to 1982 when he retired and moved to Margaretville.

Ralph was active in Allied Nautical Cadets and in the Girl Scouts of America, the Roxbury Seniors’ Club and was a past Commander of Middletown American Legion Post 216. He was also a fireman while working for Republic Aviation.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, snowshoeing, boating, dancing, music, and traveling.

Ralph is survived by his wife of 73 years, Ruth Smith; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Skip Jester; grandchildren, Ralph and Wendy Sprague, Penny and Greg Finch, Joanne and Claude Phillips, Lenny and Wendy Smith, Melissa and Larry Hull, and Jesse Smith. Ten great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren also survive.

He was predeceased by his son, Steven Smith, his parents, and a half brother, William Lackmann.

A memorial service will be held at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville on Friday, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m.

Calling hours will be held prior to the service from 11 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m.

Donations in memory of Ralph G. Smith may be made to the Middletown American Legion Post 216.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
