Chancey Burroughs

Chancey  A.  Burroughs, 59, a resident of Grand Gorge, a loving husband, father, and PaPa, who will be greatly missed by his family, died at his residence on Tuesday, Oct.  18, 2016 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. He faced it with dignity , strength,  and fought to the very end.

Chan was born December 23, 1956 at Margaretville, the son of Curtis and Velva (Foster) Burroughs. He married his longtime  sweetheart, Deborah Ann Mudge on April 13, 1985 at Roxbury.

He worked in the maintenance department at NCOC in Grand Gorge, and also for Tom Miner in his fuel and furniture businesses and enjoyed operating his own carpenter business.

He was an ancestor of the naturalist, John Burroughs, grew up on the family farm, and spent summers with his grandmothe, Blanche at Woodchuck lodge. He loved nature and enjoyed hunting, trout fishing, beach vacations, kite flying, telling stories, and was known as Candyman to many  people.

Chan was a simple man, free spirited, but had a great love for his family.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Ann Burroughs; a son, Joshua (Paige) Burroughs, and a grandson, Carter Joshua Burroughs. Also surviving are his sisters, Elizabeth, Blanche, and Margaret and brothers, John C., Robert, and David; his mother- and father-in-law, Dennis and Joan Moore and by many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles . He also leaves behind his beagle friend, Odie P.

He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Edward and Curtis and a sister, AnnMarie.

Calling hours will be held at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury on Sunday, Oct. 23 from 5 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 24 at the Jay Gould  Memorial Reformed Church in Roxbury with  Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. 

A committal service will follow at the Roxbury Cemetery. Following the services there will be a gathering for family and friends at the Grand Gorge Fire Dept. community hall.
