Festival of Voice opens with a bang

Many events daily through Sunday
Joan Lawrence-Bauer

The Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice got off with a  bang Thursday night when Hudson Valley musicians with the Paul Green Rock Academy doing "Rock the Beatles" slammed hits from the psyhedelic era out of the park.  This year's seventh annual festival -- a celebration of Shakespeare and things British -- is underway now through Sunday throughout the hamlet.  On tap are dozens of different presentations at a variety of venues.

Among the highlights Friday are a Carey Harrison presentation, "Hamlet: For Once and For All" at 2:00 p.m. and Cole Porter's "Kiss Me Kate" on the Main Stage at 8:00 p.m.

Saturday highlights are a 3:30 performance of music and verse.  Harrison and local star Justin Kolb will perform "Enoch Arden,"  Tennyson's epic poem with music by Richard Strauss.

The festival closes Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. with a Festive Celtic Gala.  More information and tickets are at www.phoeniciavoicefest.org or 845-802-5266.
