Rose Smith

Rose M. Smith, 100, of Fleischmanns, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2011, at the Kingston Hospital, Kingston, due to complications from a fall.

She was born September 26, 1910, in the Town of Colchester, the daughter of John and Rosalia (Kallay) Tirpak. She married Thomas Leyden Smith on September 19, 1929, in Walton. He died April 16, 1981.

Rose was a waitress at Glantz’s Winnisook Lodge in Arkville, where she met her husband-to-be, Thomas Leyden Smith, who was a chauffeur at the lodge.

She was an active business person assisting her husband with his business and operating a recreation area known as Lake Switzerland. Rose was a longtime Fleischmanns resident before entering Mountainside Residential Care Center in July 2007.

She enjoyed traveling with family and friends and spending time at their vacation cabin in Canada.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas L. Smith Jr. and his wife Dorissa; daughter-in-law, Connie Smith of Brooklyn; grandchildren, Carol Cook and her husband Jim of Atlanta, GA, Gary Smith and his wife Toni, of Margaretville, Greg Smith of Brooklyn and Valerie Smith of Brooklyn; great-grandchildren, Lindsey Mead and her husband Max of Accord, and Brent Smith of Margaretville.

She was predeceased by her son, George Smith; sisters, Ethel Kelly, Isabel Mason, Margaret Olmstead Carroll, Anne Connelly and Julia Cantwell.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. Paul Catena, as celebrant. Burial will be in the Clovesville Cemetery, Fleischmanns.
