Ward Reynolds

Ward G. Reynolds, 92, of Halcott Center, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at the Albany Medical Center.

He was born June 4, 1918 in Fleischmanns, the son of the late Garfield and Claretta Griffin Reynolds and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the South Pacific during World War II. He had been a dairy farmer for many years, having owned and operated the Sun Top Guernsey Farm in Halcott until 1968.

Ward was supervisor for the Town of Halcott for approximately 12 years and a member of the county board of supervisors. He was an officer with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department for over 25 years, having retired as undersheriff in 1980.

He had been a member of the Halcott Fire Department, the American Legion, the Free & Accepted Masons Lodge and the Greene Valley Grange #881.

Both he and his wife, Ruth, who predeceased him in 2007, were pilots who used the airstrip in the valley. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fly-fishing and enjoyed outdoor activities, as well as pressing cider and making ice cream with his grandchildren. Ward was very social and a friend to everyone.

Surviving are his two sons, Alan of Halcott and Warren of Phoenicia; two daughters and their spouses, Peg and Michael DiBenedetto and Nancy Reynolds and Lee Austin of Halcott. Also surviving are a brother, Odell Reynolds of Kingston, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A service to celebrate the life of Ward Reynolds will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main Street, Phoenicia with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt as celebrant.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Margaretville Hospital Auxiliary or the Halcott Community Fund.
