William Mugford, 102, of Big Indian died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
He was born June 17, 1909 in Wilkes Barre, PA, son of the late William and Esther Steiner Mugford.
Bill worked as an operator at Refined Sugar & Syrup of Yonkers for 25 years, having retired at age 65.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in WWII, and was a member of the Phoenicia American Legion Post #950.
Bill was honored by the Shandaken Seniors as Citizen of the Year in 2007. He loved both the city and the Catskill Mountains. He enjoyed helping his neighbors, baking for church functions, playing the piano, gardening and traveling for vacations.
Bill was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who often let you know just what he was thinking.
Surviving are his daughter, Sue Ann Hasher Scofield and her husband, Jim of Wappingers Falls; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marie in 2000, a son, Bill in 1982 and his sister, Pearl.
A service to celebrate the life of Bill was held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main St., Phoenicia.
Friends were received on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home.
