William H. Cure, 86, of Upper Birch Creek Road, Pine Hill, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009 at his residence after a brief illness. He was born May 28, 1923 in Pine Hill, the son of the late Obed and Luella Lasher Cure.
William was a native and lifelong resident, who was active with the family dairy farm on Upper Birch Creek until 1959.
He served as caretaker for Doc Reisser’s property for 43 years, as well as caretaking for other folks and summer residents. He had been employed at the Highmount Ski Center in 1949, and for 17 years he was a heavy equipment operator for the Town of Shandaken having retired in 1978.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also had a green thumb and was successful at cultivating and tending to his vegetable and flower gardens.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Mary Oliver Cure; a son, William “Bud” Cure; two daughters, Patricia Searle of Fleischmanns and Alice Brannen of Oxford; seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Everette, Pearl, Fraiser, Harold and Dorothy.
A gathering to celebrate his life was held privately.
