Village races on ballot Wednesday; check back tonight for vote tallies

By Julia Green
Voters head to the polls today in Fleischmanns and Margaretville to cast their ballots for mayor and trustee positions.
On the ballot in the Margaretville mayoral election are Deputy Mayor John VanBenschoten and Central Catskills Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Carol O’Beirne. Current trustee Iris Mead and Margaretville resident Wallace Patterson are running for two open seats on the village’s board of trustees.
Registered voters in Margaretville may vote at the village clerk’s office between 12 and 9 p.m.
In Fleischmanns, incumbent mayor Malcolm Becker has been challenged by village planning board member Dave Morell in the mayoral election while incumbent trustees Harriet Grossman and Martin Moralis seek re-election to the board with Todd Pascarella running as a challenger. The top two vote-getters will serve on the board until March 2011. Becker did not file his nominating petition in time to appear on the ballot, and as a result is urging voters to write his name on the ballot.
Fleischmanns voters may cast their ballots in the Skene Memorial Library between 12 and 9 p.m.
Election results will be posted on the Catskill Mountain News Web site as soon as they are tallied. Results are expected to be posted by 10:30 p.m.; visit us online at to see the results.
