Village meeting on Community Reconstruction
Margaretville – Residents of the Village of Margaretville are encouraged to attend a public meeting on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Margaretville Firehall on Church Street to learn about the state-sponsored New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program.
This program will build on the work done through the Long Term Community Recovery Strategy and other existing local plans. The topic will be Status of Process and Overview of Draft Plan. For meeting information contact co-chairs: Carol O’Beirne at 586-3300 or Glen Faulkner at 586-3311. Refreshments will be offered at 9:30 a.m.
The reality is that Margaretville will be flooded again. Planners have this opportunity with the NY Rising Communities program to take the steps that will help the community not only be prepared for the next flood but that will get us through the worst, so we can weather things at our best.
The NY Rising Communities program, funded through HUD as part of the Sandy Relief funding, is important because it is locally-oriented; it utilizes an understanding of Margaretville that only someone who lives and works around the village of Margaretville can have.
The first public outreach event took place at the Cauliflower Festival with members of the committee and planning firm in attendance. Paper surveys were completed and video recordings of interviews with area residents were collected by the Media Class students from Margaretville Central School, under the guidance of Christina Stickler, Media/Technology teacher.
The second public outreach event was held on October 15 for the Margaretville business community that is consistently and dramatically impacted by the recurring floods. The cost and trauma of those experiences takes its toll on the business owners. Margaretville depends on its ability to continue to provide the necessary services, retail and hospitality businesses to our residents, neighbors and to the traveling public.
The input from this group is essential to the next steps for flood reconstruction planning and creating a sustainable economic future for Margaretville and surrounding communities.
The New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program is one of several Storm Recovery Initiatives and was established to provide additional rebuilding and revitalization assistance to Communities severely damaged by Hurricanes Sandy and Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. To facilitate community redevelopment planning and the resilience of Communities, the State has established the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program and has allocated $25 million for planning in the most affected communities. Later allocations of funds will be used to support the implementation of projects and activities identified in the plans that the identified communities will produce.
