Vampire movie filming locally; call is out for background roles
By Brian Sweeney
“Stake Land,” a new vampire-themed movie produced by Glass Eye Pix, is currently filming around Margaretville and Pine Hill.
The movie, to be released in 2010, stars Kelly McGillis (“Witness” and “Top Gun”), Danielle Harris (star of Rob Zombie’s “Halloween” movies), Michael Cerveris (“Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant” and the TV show “Fringe”) and Conor Paolo (“Gossip Girl”).
Parts of the movie have been shot in Pennsylvania and local filming recently commenced. The casting team is seeking area residents to fill a number of “background actor” slots. See related story.
The film, written by Jim Mickle and Nick Damici and directed by Jim Mickle (“Mulberry Street”), takes place following a global spread of vampirism. McGillis plays a nun who joins a small team of survivors as they make a treacherous journey north to safety through the war-torn U.S.
McGillis’ character, “Sis-ter,” faces a crisis of faith during the vampire bloodshed, ultimately taking up arms to do battle with her newly formed family unit.
“It’s an apocalyptic vampire Western,” Mr. Mickle said in a recent interview. “It’s told through the eyes of a young boy who is taken under the wing of Nick, who plays a brutal, solitary ghoul hunter in a world populated by grungy creatures—these are not the pretty ‘True Blood’” vampires.”
He continued, “It’s kind of a new Depression; politics have fallen and the economy has fallen. And it’s their story together—how this kid goes from being a young boy in a suburban town to ultimately becoming a stone cold vampire killer. This was written back before the election, so it’s got some political-mindedness to it, because that was a hot topic at the time—the economics and financial system.”
Filming began in August and is expected to take five months.
“Stake Land” is the latest film to be filmed locally. “You Can Count on Me,” for which Laura Linney earned a Best Actress Academy Award nomination, was filmed largely in Margaretville and Roxbury in 2000. In 1997, “Julian Po,” starring Christian Slater, was shot primarily in Fleischmanns. Parts of the 2006 film, “The Night Listener,” were filmed in Phoenicia and featured Robin Williams.
