Tours, program set at Woodchuck Lodge

Woodchuck Lodge, the rustic Roxbury farmhouse where naturalist John Burroughs spent summers from 1910 to 1920, will be open for guided tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 6 and 7. On Saturday, Sept. 6 Richard Parisio, an environmental educator with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, will read some nature poetry, along with excerpts from nature-inspired prose and then will lead a workshop to help participants write their own poems, essays and short stories. Meet at the Lodge at 11 a.m.
There is no fee for tours or the program, but donations towards the restoration and upkeep of the 1860s building are greatly appreciated.
“In the Field with Pen and Paper: Nature Poetry and Journaling in the spirit of John Burroughs,” is sponsored by Woodchuck Lodge, Inc., the nonprofit organization which maintains the national historic landmark where literary naturalist John Burroughs wrote some of his most notable essays.
Rich Parisio is a published poet, and has coordinated “River of Words” in New York for the past 10 years, conducting nature poetry workshops throughout the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains. He has worked as an environmental educator for DEC since 1984. Before that, he taught elementary and middle school science for six years, and worked as a naturalist in the Pocono Mountains, and at Assateague Island and Everglades National Parks.
The final program in Woodchuck Lodge’s summer series of family-friendly activities will be held October 4 at 11 a.m., when John McDaniel, Program Director of Manhattan Country School Farm in Roxbury, will lead an informal nature walk titled “Earthspeak: Learning the Language of the Land.”
Woodchuck Lodge is located on Burroughs Memorial Road off Hardscrabble Road, three miles from NYS Route 30, just north of the hamlet of Roxbury, Delaware County.
