Tour Woodchuck Lodge this weekend

Roxbury —Woodchuck Lodge, the farmhouse where naturalist John Burroughs spent summers from 1910 to 1920, will be open for free tours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday, August 7 and 8.

The lodge is located at 1633 Burroughs Memorial Road, Roxbury, 12474. Follow signs from Route 30, just north of the hamlet of Roxbury.

Come stand on the rustic porch Burroughs built for observing plants, animals, weather and passersby, and where he often slept on a metal cot. Visitors are invited to tour the first floor of the 1862 house, where the famous essayist entertained guests like Henry Ford and Thomas Edison.
Bring lunch to enjoy at the newly installed picnic table on the grounds. A short walk up the road brings you to peaceful Burroughs Memorial Field, where the naturalist is buried beside his treasured Boyhood Rock. The site features an outdoor exhibit on his life and work, and more picnic facilities.
