Thelma Osterhoudt, 91, formerly of Big Indian, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011 at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.
She was born April 19, 1920 in Arena, daughter of the late Stanley and Lillian (Jones) Osterhoudt. A native and lifelong area resident, Thelma was involved in community activities for the good of all. She was a member of the Big Indian-Oliverea Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and held several offices over the years. She was formerly active in the Fleischmanns United Methodist Church and in many of the church’s activities.
Thelma had been the head operator for the New York Telephone Company in Fleischmanns for 14 summers, as there was no year-round operator at that time. She was employed in the banking industry, having been with Deak National Bank for 15 years, and as a bookkeeper at Wilber National Bank. She was a member of the Shandaken Senior Citizens, and enjoyed working outdoors in her gardens.
Surviving are her two sons, Stanley and his wife Leta Cable of Lake Katrine and Richard and his wife Jane Cable of Big Indian. Also surviving are four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Donald of Fleischmanns, Douglas of Cairo and Francis of Florida and a sister, Barbara Shultis, also of Florida. She was predeceased by Harrison, Gertrude, Margaret, Henry and Marilyn.
A service to celebrate the life of Thelma was held on Monday, Oct. 17, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main Street, Phoenicia.
Friends were received on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home. Burial is in the Bedell Cemetery in Redkill.
