The winter that wouldn't let go

Winter's Iron GripWinter's Iron Grip

The first day of spring is only 16 days away on March 20, but winter has yet to show any sign of releasing its grip on the Central Catskills. Area temperatures Tuesday morning were well below zero and snow continues to cover the mountains. Some eager maple-syrup producers have tapped with pipeline and hung traditional buckets from spiles but a quick look at the long-range weather forecast shows no maple-syrup producing weather for at least 10 days. While the maple-syrup season is off to a late start, regional ski areas are still enjoying excellent conditions and good weekend crowds. Daylight savings time begins Sunday morning and with it, another hour of welcome evening light. — Photos by Dick Sanford
