Susan (Dittell) Cassella passed away on Saturday Sept. 29, 2012.
Susie was born in Brooklyn on April 8, 1954. She moved to Arkville in 1992, where she met her husband Vito. In 2002 she and Vito moved to Inverness, Florida.
She was an avid gardener and soon became known for her lovely angel garden. Admirers would often stop by for cuttings of her varied plants and some folks would bring her plants to add to her garden.
Susie cared deeply about animals. She enjoyed visiting the Center for Great Apes and was very concerned that the rapid building in Florida was destroying the habitats of indigenous creatures. She loved to sit on her screened back porch and watch the dragonflies, egrets, woodpeckers, and her favorite the endangered Florida Sandhill cranes. She even enjoyed watching the alligators sun themselves on the banks of the lake behind her home. She loved her two pet cats, Spanky and Scout and her dog Shyann.
She was pre-deceased by her mother, Clarice Harper.
She is survived by her father, John Harper, Inverness, FL; husband, Vito, Inverness, FL; stepson, Vito, Jr., Downsville; and the person she called her greatest achievement of her life, her son, David Dittell of Los Angeles, CA. Other survivors include her sister, Ann Lukin and her husband, Mark, Margaretville; her sister, Patricia Terwilliger and her husband, Butch, Brooklyn; five nephews and two nieces. She is also survived by her “Flamingo Sisters” whom she dubbed her amazing women friends, Ann, Kim, Deb, Kathy and Janet.
Susie was a quiet, private person with a great sense of humor. Most of all, she was a true friend and confidante! Her strong will helped her to fight her battle with cancer with infinite wisdom and grace. She will be sorely missed by all who loved her.
In memory of Sue, donations may be sent to: H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, 12902 Magnolia Drive, Tampa, Fl. 33612 or Center for Great Apes, PO Box 488, Wauchula, Fl. 33873.
