Sophia Van Benschoten Wilkes, 101, was born August 11, 1908 in Andes, the daughter of Jay and Lena (Hasbrouck) Van Benschoten died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009 in Alexandria, Va.
She attended school during her elementary years and graduated from Margaretville High School after which she left the area to attend Plattsburgh State Normal School to obtain a teaching degree. She then taught school on Fisher’s Island, N.Y. until she was married to Donald E. Wilkes.
Sophia became an accomplished artist, seamstress, homemaker and devoted wife and mother.
Genealogical work has been done on her family and it has been found that not only are there many Revolutionary War Patriots on her family tree, but that she was also a Mayflower descendant.
Surviving are three children, eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
There will be a burial service at the Margaretville Cemetery on Thursday, Oct. 15.
