"Shirley Valentine" at Open Eye
Margaretville — Willy Russell’s “Shirley Valentine,” winner of two Laurence Olivier Awards, a Drama Desk Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, a Tony Award, and a Theatre World Award comes to The Open Eye Theater in Margaretville on Thursday, Aug. 27, at 7:30 p.m. The show will play Thursdays - Sundays through Sept. 6.
The one-character play stars Open Eye veteran actress Patti Van Tassel as Shirley Valentine, a middle-aged, working-class Liverpool housewife who finds herself so stagnant and in a rut that she is reduced to talking to the wall. When her best friend invites her to join her on a holiday in Greece, she throws caution to the wind, packs her bags, and goes. In Greece she finds adventure and a new realization of who she is and what her existence can be.
Patricia Van Tassel has previously appeared at The Open Eye Theater in “Shame the Devil,” “Our Town,” “Anne of Green Gables,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and others. She has also performed for The Little Victory Players in “Jacque Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris,” and “The Belle of Amherst.” She is well known throughout the region for her musical group, Patti Van Tassel and the Gentlemen of Leisure.
Open Eye producing artistic director Amie Brockway has directed this comedy/drama, and has designed the costumes. Adrienne J. Brockway has designed the set, lighting, and sound. Alisa Fersch is stage manager.
