Shandaken seeks to fill planning board seat

By Jay Braman Jr.
As a new year draws closer, the Town of Shandaken is trying to get its planning board up to full membership.
The planning board consists of seven volunteer members, each with staggered seven-year terms. The board is responsible for hearing cases regarding special use permits, site plan review, lot line adjustments and subdivisions. It then must make determinations on whether those permits should be granted and what conditions or restrictions should be placed within such permits to protect the town and the quality of life of its residents.
Following the departure of long-time board member Joan Munster earlier this year, the board limped along with only six members until this month when the town board appointed Pine Hill resident Kathy Jordan to fill Munster’s term which expires on December 31, 2014.
But the board will only have a full roster for this month as another long time member, Faye Storms is leaving to take a seat on the town board after winning that seat in the last election.
Once Storms makes that switch, the town board will need to make another appointment to fill her vacancy.

Recommendations
While it is ultimately the town board’s decision who to appoint, the board traditionally supports the recommendation of the planning board, which conducts interviews of potential candidates and presents the town board with one choice.
The position is a volunteer, non-compensatory membership. The only requirement is that candidates must be residents of the town.
Anyone interested interested in joining the board should send a resume and letter of intent to Joanne Kalb, Planning Board Chairwoman, via email at shandakenbldg@gmail.com or mail it to PO Box 134 Shandaken NY 12480. It can also be dropped off at town hall in Allaben. The deadline for submissions is 3 p.m. on December 31.

Other members
In addition to Kalb and Jordan, planning board members are Art Christie, Don Brewer, John Horn, and Cliff Rabuffo.
In other news, Shandaken is also seeking a part-time assistant dog control officer. The position brings carries a $4,000 yearly salary. Email all inquiries to nancyhudler@gmail.com or call the town clerk at 688-5004.
