Jessie Sparks of Ocean Springs, Mississippi made her annual visit to Roxbury, a guest of Gene and Billie Beirne. Jessie and Billie were raised like sisters and attended Roxbury Central School.
Among those attending the barbecue at Vinny and Anne Snyder’s home on Labor Day were also Connie McAfee and Mickey.
Doris Smith was given a party to celebrate her birthday last Saturday. She turned 95 on Friday, Aug. 29.
Are you a present or potential member of a nonproft board? If so, you may be interested in the following event. A nonprofit workshop on “Board 2.0: Recruiting, Developing and Retaining a Motivated Board of Directors in the 21st century,” will be offered by the Council of Community Services of New York State (CCSNYS) on September 13. The presentation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at The Roxbury Arts Group’s Walter Meade Gallery in Roxbury.
This workshop is designed to convey the importance of board development and its role in the overall functioning of nonprofit organizations. It will emphasize on-line technologies and their role in the importance of ongoing board development and recruitment, nominating and retention strategies.
The workshop cost is $20 for CCSNYS members and $30 for nonmembers. Registration can be done on-line at under “Events” or by calling 607 436-3124. This training is co-sponsored by The Roxbury Arts Group.
Looking for a book discussion group? There’s one coming soon to a library near you. Roxbury Library Association is offering “Reading Between the Lines” led by Roxbury resident and poet Barry Seiler. The first of four monthly meetings in the series is on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 1-2:30 p.m. at RLA. Wallace Stegmer’s Angle of Repose is the book to be discussed on that date. Are you a senior adult looking for a good meal and social contacts? The meal at the Senior Dining Center, Civic Center in Grand Gorge, is designed for you. Thursday evening, September 18 at 4:45 p.m. is this month’s date for the evening meal. The cost is $5. Contact Site Manager Christine Thorington at 607 588-6166 to reserve your place for the evening meal, or daily noon meal (except holidays and days when evening meals are served). Noon meals are served from 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Parenting young children? There’s a class just for you whether you’re a couple or a single parent.
“Parenting: the Early Years: Raising Your Children Using Biblical Principles” will be offered at six Sunday evening classes beginning September 21, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Roxbury United Methodist Church.
