Roxbury Central School Olympiad Team advances to state finals

The Roxbury Central School Science Olympiad Team has qualified for the state finals with a third-place over-all finish in a field of 13 teams at the Capital Area Regional Tournament. The team was challenged by 20 different events involving science concepts and understandings, problem solving and technical construction. All 20 events will be contested at the state finals on April 23 and 24, at the State University at New Paltz, with an additional five events added to the list.
The team will face a difficult preparation period over the next six weeks as they try to cover the 25 events with only 11 team members. The team has been operating shorthanded all season as the normal team strength is 15 members.
Top events were:
Bronze Medal in Car of Tomorrow for Heather Reinshagen and Adam Loper; Bronze Medal in Ecology for Jennifer Wallace and Lisa Fairbairn; Bronze Medal in Shock Value for Joe McAfee and Adam Loper; Bronze Medal in Sumo Bots for Heather Reinshagen and Lisa Fairbairn; Bronze Medal in Science Crime Busters for Rachel Back and Katie Fairbairn and Bronze Medal in Trajectory for Kerrigan Kellerhouse and Miranda Cross.
Also Silver Medal in Junkyard Challenge for Heather Reinshagen and Larissa Shultis and Silver Medal in Road Scholar for Heather Reinshagen and Bailey O’Donnell.
Gold Medal in Disease Detective for Bailey O’Donnell and Kennedy Faraci; Gold Medal in Elevated Bridge for Elaine Faison and Adam Loper and Gold Medal in Ornithology for Elaine Faison and Joe McAfee.
The team is coached by Fred Zimmerman, Fred Zerega, Jaime Kellerhouse, Cathy Rappleyea, Al Vigna, Joan Riordan and Ken Meskill.
