Roxbury Arts Group to present two exciting shows
Roxbury — The Roxbury Arts Group (RAG) will present two exciting series starting in June.
To compliment the best acoustic house in the Catskills, the RAG is very happy to announce the Essential Thursdays Series; three performances curated by world-class pianist Jungeun Kim.
And to highlight the intimacy and ambiance of the Carriage House Theater at 76 MAIN! in Stamford, New England’s favorite singer-songwriter John Scarpulla has put together three evenings titled John Scarpulla & Friends, featuring himself with a guest artist whose music and styles impressed him so much while on tour that he just had to bring them to the Catskill community to enjoy.
All performances for the Essential Thursdays at the Old School Baptist Church and for the John Scarpulla & Friends at 76 MAIN! will be at 7:30 p.m.
Jungeun Kim, director of instrumental accompaniment and outside performances at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and executive director of the New York State Music Festival (NYSMF) held in Oneonta every summer has curated three very special evenings for the Essential Thursdays series at Old School Baptist Church. It all starts Thursday, June 27 with the first of three Essential Thursdays: Jazz Quartet featuring Janelle Reichman on tenor saxophone, Matt Davis on guitar, Bob Sabin on bass, and Gernot Bernroider on drums.
Reichman’s beautiful tone and creative melodic ideas landed her a spot in the IAJE Sisters-in-Jazz Quintet, which opened for Nicholas Payton at the 2004 IAJE Conference in New York, and had performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. as part of the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival.
Matt Davis is a guitarist, arranger and composer based in the Philadelphia and New York areas and currently serves as Senior Lecturer in Jazz guitar performance at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and is a teaching artist for the New York Pops.
Robert Sabin is an active bassist, composer, and educator specializing in jazz and contemporary improvised music. He was awarded Second Place in both the 2001 and 2003 International Society of Bassist’s Jazz Competitions.
Austrian born drummer and composer, Gernot Bernroider, has performed with top ranking musicians throughout Europe and the United States. He has shared the concert stage with renowned artists such as Dr. Billy Taylor, Benny Powell, Jane Monheit and Alan Praskin to name a few.
Essential Thursdays continues with Classical Duo featuring the series curator Jungeun Kim on piano and Saeka Matsuyama on violin on July 11 and completing the Essential Thursdays performances, a woodwind trio featuring Robert Phillips on bassoon, Pascal Archer on clarinet and Dr. Mark Snyder on oboe will perform on August 1.
Musician John Scarpulla will headline three upcoming evenings in the Carriage House at 76 MAIN! entitled “John Scarpulla & Friends - Unplugged and Intimate.” Each one of these performances will feature Scarpulla with a different singer/songwriter whose music and styles impressed him so much while on tour, that he just had to bring them to the Catskill community to enjoy. Both Scarpulla and guests: Walker Hornung on June 29, Sophie Gault on July 27 and Mike Poulopoulos on September 21, will perform a set each of their own music and then end the evenings singing together. All of the John Scarpulla & Friends performances will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Carriage House at 76 MAIN! in Stamford.
On June 29, Scarpulla’s special guest will be Walker Hornung, known for his blend of rock and Trinidadian soca, a type of music known as the “soul of calypso.”
On July 27, Scarpulla will be joined by Sophie Gault. Born in Maryland and raised on the eastern shore, Gault was first influenced by her father’s love of rhythm and blues.
