Robert Van Benschoten

Robert A. Van Benschoten, 90, of Margaretville died April 11, 2012 at Margaretville Hospital. 
Robert was born October 25, 1921 in New Kingston, the son of Andrew and Laura (Worden) Van Benschoten. He married Sally Ann (Foote) on Sept 6, 1985 at the Methodist Church in Latham.

Mr. Van Benschoten’s work with New York State commenced with the Department of Conservation on March 1, 1948 as a game protector (now called conservation officer.) He served in Delaware County as a game protector until 1967 when he was promoted to lieutenant, supervising Delaware, Schoharie, Otsego and Montgomery counties. In 1968 he was promoted to captain in charge of administration in the Albany Central Office for a year and a half. He was then transferred to captain in charge of the Albany Regional Office and also in charge of Schenectady, Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene counties for a year and a half. From 1971 to ’74 he was captain in charge of the Regional Stamford Office, serving Delaware Schoharie, Otsego, and Montgomery counties. From 1974 until August of 1975 he was Temporary Assistant Director, Division of Law Enforcement, serving out of the Albany Central Office. When William Goodman, former director of the division, retired in August, 1975, Mr. Van Benschoten served as acting director until he was appointed director in 1976.

Robert lived in New Kingston and Margaretville most of his life. He graduated from Margaretville High School in 1940. He was a member of the American Legion, Margaretville Rotary, and Margaretville - New Kingston Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He was president of Margaretville Memorial Hospital Board in May of 1993 when they broke ground for Mountainside Residential Care Center. He was also a member of Margaretville Fire Department. Robert served in the Army and was honorable discharged in 1945.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Ann Van Benschoten; one son, Bryan Robert (Shirley) Van Benschoten; one daughter, Barbara Lee (Donald) Barbeau; one grandson, Elijah Matthew Van Benschoten and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday April 28, 2012 at New Kingston Presbyterian Church in New Kingston with Pastor Shirley Davis officiating.

Donations in memory of Robert A. Van Benschoten may be made to Margaretville-New Kingston Presbyterian Church, Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville Hospital, or Margaretville Rotary.
