Robert Smith Mead, 95, of Roxbury, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Andrew Gray, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born February 2, 1913, the son of Smith and Katherine Depew Mead. He married Hazel Hinkley on December 5, 1931. She predeceased him on January 29, 2006 after 74 years of happiness.
Together they ran a dairy farm for many years.
After his retirement he worked with his sons, Gordon in Roxbury and Ralph in Georgia as well as helping his son-in-law Andrew of Roxbury at various jobs.
Surviving are two sons, Ralph (Marie) Mead, Georgia, Gordon Mead, Roxbury; a daughter, Emily (Andrew) Gray, Roxbury; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Grace Todd, Florida. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy; a daughter-in-law, Mary and two great-grandsons, John Mc Gee and Michael Gordon Mead; a brother and three sisters.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 21 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Roxbury with Rev. William Hawes and Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.
Burial followed at Roxbury Methodist Cemetery.
