Richard E. Finch, 76, of Roxbury and Summerfield, Florida, passed away Monday, Aug. 25, 2008 at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital. He was born August 9, 1932 in Margaretville, son of the late Lloyd and Mabel Hammond Finch. Dick was a Halcottsville resident since 1957 and a part-time resident of Florida for almost 30 years. He was a member and chief of the Halcottsville Fire Department for many years. He was the owner and operator of Brookside Hardware in Margaretville from 1988 to 1994. He previously was a partner at Hubbell Bros. for years; had drilled for gas in Roxbury and maintained a vending machine route. Years ago, he drew cauliflower to New York City for area farmers, drove school bus in Roxbury for years and years, and was a 13-year member of the Roxbury Central School Board of Education. He was an active member of the Antique Car Club.
He spent winters in Florida and enjoyed lawn mowing. He had a workshop where he refinished furniture and did various woodworking.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years Nancy Hubbell Finch; two sons; Stephen Finch and his companion Ann Hoffman of Halcottsville and William Finch and his wife Sherry of Roxbury; five grandchildren, Bill, Kim, Alexa, Stefanie and Michael and two great-grandchildren also survive.
There will be no public services by his request. Private inurnment will take place at the family plot in the Halcottsville Cemetery at a later time.
