Red-hot Pistolera plays Saturday at RAG center

Roxbury — Pistolera, a New York City based band that draws from traditional styles of Mexican music while fusing it with a pop-rock sensibility, will take the stage at The Roxbury Arts Center on Saturday, June 6, at 7:30 p.m.
The electrifying quartet defines the Latin alt-folklorico genre, featuring the Spanish lyric songs of vocalist and guitarist Sandra Lilia Velásquez, the driving accordion melodies of Maria Elena, and the unbeatable rhythm section of bassist Inca B. Satz and drummer Ani Cordero.
Since the release of their debut album, “Siempre Hay Salida,” in 2006, the band has been featured in Billboard Magazine, The New Yorker, Latina Magazine, El Diario, and on such top-rated radio shows such as NPR’s “Open Mic,” “Democracy Now!” with Amy Goodman and John Schaeffer’s “Soundcheck” on WNYC.
“Siempre Hay Salida” debuted on the Top 20 of the CMJ World and Latin Alt. Charts.
Pistolera tours widely and will be appearing this summer with Los Lobos. The reviews wherever they go are ecstatic. The Houston Press says “… when Sandra Lilia Vasquez stomps her boots to drummer Ani Cordero’s rim shots on jumping songs, by the time they finish, your clothes will be soaked with sweat, the soles of your dancing shoes will be smoking and you won’t care whether they’re from Brooklyn or Matamoros as long as they don’t let the party end” and The New York Post says “Groove along with Pistolera … which blends together ranchera, cumbia, banda and rock sounds. Velasquez’s intoxicating voice and her passion while playing the electric guitar, matched with Cordero’s driving drum style, make for quite a spectacular live performance.”
