Rebecca H. Wickham, 89, of Margaretville passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, Oct. 6, 2009, at Margaretville Hospital. Rebecca was born November 11, 1919, in the Town of Hardenburgh, the daughter of Burton and Lula Hall. Rebecca married Eugene Wickham Jr. March 28, 1937 in Arena. Their marriage lasted until the death of Eugene on April 22, 2008. They were fortunate to celebrate a remarkable 70th wedding anniversary.
Rebecca was a strong woman, highly regarded by everyone who knew her. She was a devoted and attentive farmer’s wife whose gregarious nature led her into a number of services to the community. She volunteered as an airplane spotter for the Civil Defense during World War II, taught Sunday school, served a number of years as the Republican Board of Elections Inspector and was a member of the D.A.R., Stone Schoolhouse Historical Society, and the Advent Christian Church.
Rebecca was predeceased by all of her siblings and her husband Eugene Wickham. She is survived by her two children and their spouses; her daughter Marguerite and son-in-law Joseph McGonegal of St. Augustine and her son Larry Wickham and daughter-in-law Kimberly of Margaretville. Also surviving are her three grandchildren; granddaughters Vickie and Patty McGonegal and grandson Jason Wickham, along with three great-grandchildren Brandon, Kelsey, and Katie as well as a number of extended family members.
With special thanks to the Hynes Funeral Home of Margaretville, Rebecca’s family received many warm callings of friends and neighbors at the Friday night wake.
Her funeral service was caringly delivered by Rev. Harold Patterson and a number of mourners gave heartfelt farewells to the memory of Rebecca. A second special thank-you is extended to the Advent Christian Church, whose members put together a lovely meal following the funeral; which allowed all those who attended to rejoice in neighborly kinship.
Rebecca lived a long and fulfilling life filled with many happy memories shared by her family and friends. Her faith was indefatigable and though her body gave way to the passage of time her spirit lives on in the love of her family and neighbors. She passes now into the arms of angels and her beloved husband Eugene. She will be dearly missed.
Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
