Rani Arto & daisy mayhem bring talents to Roxbury
Roxbury — Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem will bring their unique and refreshing fusion of American roots music with pop and jazz to the Roxbury Arts Center on Saturday, Nov. 9. Twelve years in the making, Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem’s chemistry has evolved into a musical experience on stage and is why it is always at the top of the Folk Charts.
The Boston Herald claimed them to be “…one of America’s most inventive string bands…”
On stage, they are Rani Arbo (fiddle, guitar), Andrew Kinsey (bass, banjo, uke), Anand Nayak (electric and acoustic guitars) and Scott Kessel (percussion). Kessel’s percussion rig is 95 percent recycled, featuring a cardboard box, tin cans, caulk tubes, and a vinyl suitcase in lieu of a bass drum. All the band members sing, and their four-part harmonies soar, whether on a haunting Appalachian ballad, a Springsteen rocker, or a Bahamian a capella song. With songs covering topics ranging from joy to death (a band favorite), loss, aging, blackbirds and red-haired boys, this band relies on the songs themselves, arrangements and harmonies, not fireworks and sound effects. In other words, Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem is the real deal.
Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem’s repertoire includes over a century of American music as well as originals. Always with respect for a song, the band maintains its own identity by sometimes taking lyrics written for an Irish fiddle tune and then underscoring them with an Afro-Cuban canon, giving a Leonard Cohen number a clawhammer banjo treatment and bluegrass harmonies just might weave through a Springsteen tune.
Advance Tickets for Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem are $19 for adults and $17 for seniors and students. Tickets purchased the day of the event are $24. For tickets and more information please call the Roxbury Arts Group at 607 326-7908 or visit www.roxburyartsgroup.org.
