Primitive Biathlon set for Jan. 17
Shandaken —After 13 previous years of highly successful competition, the Shandaken Primitive Biathlon will be held again on January 17 in Oliverea.
While the modern Olympic Biathlon combines cross-country skiing with target shooting using light weight rifles, the primitive biathlon couples an 18th century frontiersman’s skills in using wooden snowshoes and his marksmanship utilizing a muzzle loading black powder rifle.
Registration for the biathlon will be between 8:30 a.m. and noon on January 17 with a $17 entry fee. The division of untimed participants will have a $10 entry fee. It is suggested that shooters who want to be assured of a place in the competition pre-register by January 13 by sending their names and addresses, together with a $12 pre-registration fee to: Shandaken Primitive Biathlon, Larry Hughson, Chairman, 58 Boulevard, Kingston, NY 12401. The check should be made out to the Phoenicia Fish and Game Association.
